A good Shopify Canada setup comes down to three things: registering for and charging the right sales tax in each province, configuring payments and payouts in Canadian dollars, and building shipping rates that work for both Canadian and US customers. Most of it takes an afternoon, but mistakes in tax settings or cross-border shipping can quietly eat your margin for months.

Key takeaways

  • Register for GST/HST once your taxable sales pass $30,000 over four consecutive quarters, and charge tax based on where the order is delivered.
  • Some provinces require out-of-province sellers to register for PST, including British Columbia above $10,000 in sales and Saskatchewan from the first sale.
  • Shopify only collects tax where you have added a registration, so your tax settings must match your actual registrations.
  • Since August 29, 2025, the US no longer offers duty-free de minimis treatment, so price and ship US orders with duties in mind.

Shopify makes it easy to open a store in Canada. It does not make every Canadian rule obvious. This guide walks through the settings that matter most for a Canadian business, in the order we would set them up for a new client.

Step 1: Understand your GST/HST registration

Most small businesses must register for GST/HST once taxable sales pass $30,000 over four consecutive calendar quarters. Many register earlier so they can claim input tax credits on their own business expenses.

For goods shipped to customers, the tax generally follows the delivery address:

Customer's provinceSales tax on most goods
Ontario13% HST
Nova Scotia14% HST
New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, PEI15% HST
Alberta and the territories5% GST
British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba5% GST plus provincial sales tax where registered

Confirm current rates with your accountant before launch; rates change, and some products are zero-rated or exempt.

Step 2: Check provincial sales tax registration

Provincial sales tax is separate from GST/HST, and the registration rules for out-of-province sellers vary:

  • British Columbia (7% PST): Canadian sellers outside BC generally must register once sales into BC exceed $10,000, according to EY's summary of BC's rules.
  • Saskatchewan (6% PST): out-of-province sellers must register before their first taxable sale into the province.
  • Manitoba (7% RST): registration applies once taxable sales into Manitoba reach $30,000.

If you sell nationally, assume you will need at least one PST registration as you grow.

Step 3: Configure taxes in Shopify

Shopify can calculate Canadian taxes automatically, but it only collects tax in regions where you have added a registration. In your admin:

  1. Add your GST/HST number and any PST registrations under tax settings
  2. Decide whether prices include tax; most Canadian stores show prices before tax
  3. Set up exemptions for any zero-rated or exempt products
  4. Place a test order to each province you sell to and check the totals

Getting this wrong in either direction is costly. Under-collecting means paying the tax yourself; over-collecting annoys customers and creates refund work.

Step 4: Set up Shopify Payments and payouts

Shopify Payments is available in Canada and pays out in Canadian dollars to a Canadian bank account. Turning it on lets customers pay with cards and accelerated checkouts such as Shop Pay, Apple Pay and Google Pay, without a separate payment gateway.

A few settings worth checking:

  • Payout schedule and your bank account details
  • Statement descriptor, so customers recognize the charge
  • Fraud settings, including address and card verification
  • Currencies, if you plan to show US prices to American shoppers

Step 5: Build shipping rates that don't lose money

Shipping is where many new Canadian stores lose margin. Weigh and measure your real packages, then set rates in Shopify:

  • Calculated rates pull live prices from carriers, including discounted Canada Post labels through Shopify Shipping
  • Flat rates are simpler for customers but need regular review
  • Free shipping thresholds should sit comfortably above your average order value

Large or heavy items often need dimensional-weight pricing or regional zones, especially for shipments to the North or remote areas.

Step 6: Plan for shipping to the US after de minimis

For years, Canadian stores shipped low-value orders to US customers duty-free under the US de minimis rule. As BDO explains, that exemption was suspended for all countries on August 29, 2025. Commercial shipments now face duties and full customs entry regardless of value.

What this means for your store:

  • Check CUSMA eligibility. Goods that qualify under CUSMA rules of origin can still enter duty-free, but you need documentation to prove it.
  • Decide who pays duties. Collecting duties at checkout avoids surprise bills at the customer's door, which are a common cause of refused deliveries.
  • Update product data. Accurate HS codes and countries of origin speed up clearance.
  • Revisit US pricing. Build duties and brokerage fees into prices or shipping charges.

Showing US prices

If a meaningful share of your customers are American, show prices in US dollars to US visitors. Shopify can convert prices by market and round them to clean price points, while you're still paid out in Canadian dollars. Check conversion fees and decide whether to set fixed US prices for your best sellers.

Step 7: Finish with the trust signals Canadian shoppers expect

Before launch, publish clear shipping and returns policies, show delivery estimates on product pages, state that prices are in Canadian dollars, and make your contact details easy to find. These small details lift conversion more than most apps.

Common setup mistakes we fix

  • Tax collected in provinces where the store isn't registered, or not collected where it is
  • Prices entered tax-inclusive by accident, so the store undercharges on every order
  • Flat shipping rates that ignore package size, turning heavy orders into losses
  • No HS codes or country of origin on products shipped to the US
  • Test orders never placed before launch, so checkout errors reach real customers

Each one is quick to fix once spotted, but costly if it runs unnoticed for months.

Conclusion: get the foundations right once

A careful Shopify Canada setup, with correct tax registrations, payments in CAD and shipping rates that reflect real costs, saves you from the slow leaks that hurt new stores. Once the foundations are right, you can focus on products and marketing; our Shopify Black Friday checklist covers the next step before peak season.

Frequently asked questions

When does a Shopify store in Canada need to register for GST/HST?

Most businesses must register once taxable sales exceed $30,000 over four consecutive calendar quarters. Many register earlier to claim input tax credits. Once registered, charge GST or HST based on the province the order is delivered to.

Do I need to charge PST on Shopify orders to other provinces?

It depends on the province. British Columbia generally requires out-of-province sellers to register above $10,000 in BC sales, Saskatchewan requires registration before the first taxable sale, and Manitoba's threshold is $30,000. Shopify only charges PST where you've added a registration.

Are shipments from Canada to the US still duty-free under $800?

No. The US suspended de minimis duty-free treatment for all countries on August 29, 2025. Goods that qualify under CUSMA can still enter duty-free with proper documentation, but other goods face duties and full customs entry.

Does Shopify Payments work in Canada?

Yes. Shopify Payments is available to Canadian businesses, pays out in Canadian dollars and supports cards and accelerated checkouts such as Shop Pay, Apple Pay and Google Pay.
